Getting Started With Research

Getting started with research

What Will You Write About?

You've been handed an assignment by your professor/instructor. They are asking you to not only write a paper, but it will involve a specific topic related to the class and doing research to support that topic.

Choosing a Topic

Before running down to the Library or jumping into the electronic library catalogue from home, you have to know what you want to write about.

It's also key to read and re-read the assignment requirements - make sure you understand what your instructor wants to see in the completed assignment.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Whether or not your research topic has been assigned or can you choose your own topic.
  • The specific task(s) of the assignment. Are you being asked to summarize, do a formal analysis, or analyze and compare?
  • Make note of particular restrictions or criteria to fulfill. What types of research sources are required?
  • Look for technical details like the total word count, number of pages, or specific format.
  • Pay attention to the DUE DATE. Plan accordingly so there's enough time to do good research and get the assignment completed.
